Why Should You Not Drink Tea After a Meal?

It is has been popular for many decades that Green tea helps with digestion, however; in reality green tea has little effect on boosting metabolism.

Leptin (satiety) and Ghrelin (Hunger) Hormones

The two most important hormones playing roles in regulation food intake. Leptin works as mediator for suppressing and long-term regulation of energy balance. On the other hand, Ghrelin is fast acting hormone help with initiation meal intake.

Mechanism of Leptin and Ghrelin

Leptin is released into the circulatory system by the adipose tissue. The plasma leptin cross the blood brain barrier signaling the brain and gives information about the status of energy storage in the body. Normal signaling will direct the body to decrease food intake and increase energy expenditure to maintain normal level of fat storage.

Leptin release is effected by many factors. It increases normally with the increase of food intake, and glucose uptake and decreases as aging progress, being female, and doing exercising.

Ghrelin is hormone secreted by the stomach and depend largely on the nutritional state of the body. Generally, Ghrelin acts and signal the brain in opposite of leptin. Normal signaling transmit the information to increase food intake. As result, Ghrelin is influenced by these factors which decreases its secretion: aging, growth hormone, and higher BMI.

So in conclusion, What really control your hunger and satiety are these two hormones

How all that is related to drinking GREEN TEA?

drinking tea specially tea with added sugar will increase insulin hormone secretion consequently results in reduction in secretion of leptin hormone. This will give the body short relief misleading the body to accept more food.

How could it be fixed?

In replace of tea, add two spoons of lemon juice to 1/2 cup of warm water and drink it after meal with no sugar or sweetness added. This will increase the acidity of the stomach slightly and boost the digestion process.
