How will I know my baby is ready for solid foods?

By six months you will notice that your baby is ready to accept more than milk. Your baby will start to hold his/her head up by him/herself and lost the reflex that make him/her stick out the tongue. However eating is a new skill for your baby, and during the next few two months or more, he/ she may prefer puree or mashed foods.

What can I start with?

To begin with a one spoonful to three spoonfuls are a good start. Don’t expect your child to eat a lot since he/she still breastfed. Most of the nutrition will come from breast milk of formula. However, these are good suggestions to start with:

  • Pureed or mashed cooked vegetables, such as carrot, parsnip, squach, and avocado.

  • Mashed or pureed fruits, such as banana, cooked apple, pear, or mango.

  • starchy vegetables such as sweet potato are acceptable too.

Once you feel your child is accepting these foods happily, you can move to more variety foods go along the previous list such:

  • bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta

  • dairy foods

  • meat, fish, eggs, and beans

It is important to introduce your child to wide range of foods and tastes to develop accepting different flavors and reduce the chance of becoming a fussy eater later.

Bettween seven months and nine months, your child is ready to pick up a solid foods and eat it themselves with their fingers try to offer them the previous vegetables in half- way steamed to be more soft but still manageable to be hold by their fingers.

Should I feed my baby milk before food?

It depend on the stage of weaning, if you just started introducing food for you baby at 6 months it is better to give him food after you breastfed him. As your baby gets used to foods you can give it to him/her before milk, or only offer milk between mealtimes.
