FODMAP Diet, What to know


The first time this diet was developed in 2005 by researchers at Monach university in Australia. FODMAP diet is stand for Fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharide and polyols. These are types of sugars that are difficult to be digested

and fermented by bacteria causing bloating and discomfort in the abdomen. The aim of this diet is to relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and in some cases Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Celiac Disease. By removing the potential triggers to the digestive system and reintroducing them through specific process, patient will better and maximize their optimum nutrition needs.

How does the diet work?

Patient begin with cutting out a number of food that are high in FODMAPs such as wheat, rye, onions and legumes; lactose that is found in dairy products. Fiber is also limited as it create digestive distress. After a while the patient reintegrates these food slowly and observe what sets the gastrointestinal off.

While you're on the program, patient is free to indulge in meat, poultry, fish, eggs and cold cuts; lactose-free dairy, hard cheeses, mozzarella and sherbet; nuts and seeds; wheat-free grains and flours like oats and quinoa; certain fruits such as bananas, berries, oranges and melon; and veggies, including kale, cucumbers and sweet potatoes.
